Before Liverpool signed Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg in the winter transfer window of the 2019-20 season, there were several rumours linking the Reds with Red Bull and Genk players, both of whom Liverpool had faced in the Champions League group stages. One of whom was Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge of Genk, with Jurgen Klopp apparently directly letting the midfielder know how impressed he was with him. “You are a very interesting player. Very interesting”, said Klopp. Despite this, in the same window as the signing of Minamino, Sander Berge moved to Sheffield United for £22m with the Blades flying above expectations in the Premier League.
Whether this is regurgitated old news or not, with Sheffield United’s season not so successful this time around and are doomed for the drop to the Championship and the now probable departure of Gini Wijnaldum, rumours are resurfacing that the Reds are again interested in the Norwegian midfielder. Several of the Blades top players will be looking to leave, and Berge will be top of that list.
Berge has 24 caps for Norway at the age of 23, and has been previously scouted by both Liverpool and Manchester United. It is sure that Klopp is an admirer and Sheffield United will need to cash in on some of their most valued assets to offset any financial losses from being relegated.
There could be some legs in this rumour.
