Ki-Jana Hoever. No Regrets Leaving Liverpool

I knew my playing time would be more than at Liverpool, that’s why I made the decision. I thought it was the best thing for my career in the moment.

In the summer transfer window of 2020, the young Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever left Liverpool for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was a makeshift in the transfer of Diogo Jota moving in the other direction, signing for Liverpool in what will become a fee of £40, with However making up £9 of that transfer fee. Wolves also signed another right-back in the same window when they completed the transfer of Nelson Semedo from Barcelona, who was clearly going to be ahead of Ki-Jana in the pecking order.

Despite that, the Dutchman insists that he has no regrets about the move. Given Liverpool’s disasterous injury record this season, suffering long term injuries to all three of Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Hoever would no doubt have had his chance to prove himself.

Speaking to GOAL’s Neil Jones, he said “Now of course with the injuries, you don’t know, but I don’t think like that. I just thought like, if everyone was fit, how much game time would I have?”

“Liverpool have such a great team still, maybe the best back four in the world, so it was really hard for me to break through there.

“And here the idea was good. I would be really involved in the squad, really a first-team player.

“It’s basically been what I expected, but I know I can still do better than this. It’s a good first season so far.”

Since then, in the winter transfer market, Liverpool were forced to make a move, signing both Ozan Kabak from Schalke and Ben Davies from Preston North End.
